After consulting with the Apostolic See, the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malankara Church has received the pontifical assent about the new Diocese of Parassala in Southern India. Parassala is formed from the division of the southern part of Trivandrum Archdiocese based in Thiruvananthapuram, capital of the southern Indian state Kerala.

The new head of the diocese will be Bishop Eusebios Naickamparambil, who is being transferred from the diocese of St. Mary Queen of Peace in the United States and Canada and was ordained a priest in 1986. The Catholic Church in India comprises the Latin rite and two Eastern rites called Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara.

Unlike in the Latin-rite Church, where the Pope directly appoints Bishops, the synods of the Eastern-rite Catholic churches have the autonomy of appointing their own Bishops, to which the Pope gives assent.
