Sydney: The Australian High Court today acquitted Cardinal George Pell, who has been jailed for a year following a sex scandal. The 78-year-old’s acquittal came after the Australian High Court ruled that Cardinal was not guilty of a lower court sentence. The court observed that the petitioners could not produce any credible evidence. After the verdict, the cardinal responded by saying that he was praying for those who had been charged.

In 1996, Cardinal was accused of sexually assaulting two boys at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia. He was sentenced in December 2018 to a lower court sentence. However, a full bench of seven had ruled that the cardinal was innocent. He was previously removed from the Vatican’s financial office following the indictment.
