Madrid: Spanish King Felipe VI yesterday thanked the Catholic Church for its excellent service in the philanthropic work of Spain. The King thanked Cardinal Juan Jos Omella, chairman of the National Catholic Bishops’ Council, for the church’s Social activities. The King commemorated the clergymen who died of corona and thanked the Spanish church for its generous support. About 100 clergymen have died in the country due to coronavirus.
The King expressed his gratitude and appreciation following the publication of the Annual Report of the Spanish Catholic Church in which the hospitality services of 12 million people and the social services of 28 lakhs were supported. There are many activities under the leadership of the church for the care and rehabilitation of the poor, the elderly, the disabled, the sick, the unemployed, the abused women, the addicted to alcohol and the refugee.
In April this year, mayors of Madrid and nearby cities took to the streets to thank the Catholic Church for its praiseworthy services during the Corona crisis. Some mayors sent letters to the clergy, thanking every clergyman who performed silent and heroic service throughout the Great Depression. At the same time, more than 264,000 people have been affected by COVID. Of these, 27,316 died.
