Saint Benedict of Italy taught the people to pray while working. The monks who followed him were sincere in their adherence to that principle. Their prayer with the work produced a revolutionary change in them. Their prayer revolution was nothing less than the revolutions that have taken place in today’s modern industries. The idea of Saint Benedict was to lead men to holiness. Their prayers with work have made them truly human, their family life has been greatly blessed, and social relationships have begun to change drastically.
We need to change the way we view work as a work for wealth. People who work in this mindset cannot be humane or see the good in other colleagues. Whatever our profession, place prayer in the center of work. We are sure to start making big changes in our lives.
(Holy Pope John Paul II, Rome, 19.3.94)
