On July 29, 2017, His Holiness Pope Francis, during his Angelus address in St.Peter’s Square on the feast of St.Peter and St.Paul conveyed that these two saints are the pillars of the church and compared them to the two columns, on which the visible building of the church rests.
His Holiness reflected that St.Paul and St.Peter both have experienced persecutions from the authorities for their mission of evangelizing the word of God. He reminded the deliverance of St.Peter from the prison by an angel, similarly the deliverance of St.Paul from the hostility to his mission, from both civil authorities and fellow Jews. Pope Francis said, “These two deliverances, of Peter and of Paul, reveal the common path of the two apostles, who were mandated by Jesus to announce the Gospel in difficult and in certain cases hostile circumstances.”Pope Francis observed that Penance can give us a free joyous life and the faithful will be able to declare and preach the word of God joyously after doing the penance because it is through this sacrament, the faithful receive the grace of Pardon and frees him from all the evils.
Pope Francis asked the faithful to reconcile with God always and concluded his address by praying for Rome, the city of the martyrdom of St.Peter and St.Paul.
