Kottayam: Christians today are on a fast to commemorate the days of fasting and prayer of Jesus in the desert. The Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara believers entered the Lent through fasting today, with the ashes on their foreheads to commemorate the origin and return of man to the soil. Holy Mass and special prayers would be held in the churches. According to the Latin rite, Lent officially begins on Wednesday (February 26).

Believers observe fasting, sacrificing, engaging in merciful acts, skipping meals and so on. Kurusumala pilgrimage to Kerala will be activated after the Lenten season begins. There will be a strong influx of believers to the pilgrimage centers of Malayattoor, Palayur, and Kanakamala. On the day of the fast, special services will be held in every church, including the way of the cross. Until Easter, the resurrection, Christians have no weddings. On April 12, the global Catholic Church will celebrate Easter.
