The pope’s peace appeal came to fruition by kneeling in front of Sudan’s ruling opposition leaders. The dissident factions have come together to form a united government, saying that the pope’s call for forgiveness and restoration of peace has gone into effect in less than 10 months. The bishops of South Sudan arrived in the city to wish the new government all the best. It is observed globally that the Pope has been heavily involved in the formation of the new government.
In April last year, the Vatican Secretariat and the Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury organized meditations for Sudan leaders in preparation for prayer, meeting, and reconciliation. At the end of the meditation, the pope made a plea for peace by kneeling in front of the ruling opposition leaders. This has opened the way for much larger international debate. At the same time, Pope Francis and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby of the Anglican Church are also actively suggesting a visit to Sudan.
