A decree was issued by Pope Francis that requires ‘a public association of the faithful with a view of becoming an institute to obtain a written license.’ The license will be issued by the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.’ The Rescript came into effect on June 15.
According to the Code of Canon Law, associations of Christian faith can be public or private, striving to foster a perfect life, promote public worship, or exercise other works of evangelization, works of piety or charity. The change made to the canon 579 of the Code of Canon Law by Pope Francis in 2020 motivated the Rescript. This decree will strengthen Vatican oversight over the process in the associations.
