As an effort to preserve water in the Vatican City, the Vatican has turned off its fountain since Rome and much of Italy experiences a severe drought. The higher officials from the Holy See Press Office conveyed this effort as a helping hand for Rome to get through this crisis. The two large fountains in St. Peter’s Square –Baroque masterpieces by 17th -century sculptors Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini were turned off and all the 100 fountains in the city will be turned off gradually over the next few days.
As reported by Catholic News Agency, Greg Burke, director of Holy See Press Office, remarked that “The decision is very much in line with the Pope’s thinking on ecology which says you can’t waste and sometimes you have to be willing to make a sacrifice.”
Holy Father Pope Francis , once proclaimed in a seminar that “Our right to water is also a duty to water and gives rise to an inseparable duty, God the Creator does not abandon us in our efforts to provide access to clean drinking water to each and to all.”
