Venerable Solanus Casey, who is known for his ability as a spiritual counselor, will be beatified on November 18, 2017, at a Mass in Ford Field, Detroit. Fr. Solanus Casey was an American –born Capuchin priest who died in 1957 and was very well known for his great faith, and his service to the sick. In 1898, Fr. Casey joined the Capuchin Franciscans in Detroit and after struggling through his studies because of lack of formal education, in 1904 was ordained a “sacerdos simplex”- a priest who can say Mass but not publicly preach or hear confessions. At the age of 87, Venerable Casey died from erysipelas, a skin disease, on July 31, 1957.
As reported by Catholic News Agency, Fr. Michael Sullivan, OFP Cap. and Provincial Minister of the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph, remarked that “We are filled with joy at receiving the final date of the beatification of Fr. Solanus and It is a beautiful way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of his passing.” Allen Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit stated that “The beatification of Fr. Solanus will be a tremendous blessing for the whole community of South-east Michigan, an opportunity for all of us to experience the love of Jesus Christ.”
A miracle attributed to Venerable Casey’s intercession was recognized by His Holiness Pope Francis at a May 4 meeting with His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
