A plenary indulgence has been announced by the Apostolic Penitentiary for those who will take part in the second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on July 24. The decree was issued by the Vatican tribunal on May 30.
The indulgence will be available ‘to the faithful who will devote their time physically or virtually to visit their elderly brothers or sisters in need or difficulty; to grandparents, elderly and the faithful participating in the solemn celebration by the Pope on July 24; and to the sick and elderly who are unable to leave their homes and will virtually join the Pope for the celebrations.’
Pope Francis established the commemoration in the year 2021. The day falls annually on the fourth Sunday of July, on or close to the feast of Sts. Anne and Joachim, the grandparents of Jesus. The theme for the second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was taken from Psalm 92: 15- ‘In old age, they will still bear fruit.’
