Alabama: The Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame (AWHF) pays tribute to Mother Mary Angelica, founder of The Eternal World Television Network (EWTN), the world’s first Catholic television network. Mother Mary Angelica is now in the company of more than 90 famous women, including Helen Adams Keller, Rosa Parks and Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Walter Anderton, the architect of the Our Lady of Angels’ Ashram, will perform Mother’s Day at the AWHF Museum on March 5. In addition to Mother Angelica, Sister Chrysostom Moynahan, a member of the Daughters of Charity, is the only nun in the museum.
Established on the campus of Judson College in Alabama in 1970, the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame Museum is a permanent venue to honor women who have made significant contributions to the state and the nation. The museum offers visitors the opportunity to explore famous women through portraits, photos, letters, and metal plaques. Janie Shores, the first woman judge of the Alabama Supreme Court, will be in the museum that day along with Mother Angelica.
Rita Rizzo, Mother Mary Angelica was born in 1923. In 1953, Rita joined the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration Church and adopted the name, Sister Mary Angelica. In 1962, with the help of other monks, Mother founded the ‘Our Lady of Angels Monastery’. In the mid-1970s, Mother began broadcasting her spiritual sermons on a television network connected to CBS. In 1981, Mother started the Eternal Word Television Network with a capital of just under $ 200 in the garage of her ashram. Today, EWTN is the world’s largest media network with over 30 million customers and a 24-hour program in 145 countries.
