In response to a religious procession in which around 20 boats had sailed with the statue of Our Lady of Good Voyage from the shores of Beruwala, that resulted in deaths and major injuries, the top Church officials in SriLanka has come up with strict and responsible rules to protect the people from such tragedies. Some 15people were killed and 33 were hospitalized after the overloaded trawler carrying the Church pilgrims capsized in deep seas.
After the detailed investigation, the police reported that none of the passengers were wearing life-jackets. As reported by ucanews.com, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo stressed that “We have the freedom to organize religious processions connected to our churches and shrines but we must ensure no harm to human life.”
The Bishops and priests in the country ensured to make the faithful aware about the dangerous consequences of travelling in a boat without following the rules and regulations that are must for one’s safety.
