Catholic Church condemns Euthanasia or mercy killing a threat to the gift of life which God has given us and reasons that no individual with their limited reasoning has the right to take it away.
In Victoria, a state in Australia, Euthanasia is proposed to be legalised. However, the Australian bishops’ firmly oppose the proposal. They consider it a complete opposite of care and represent the abandonment of the sick and suffering, of older and dying persons. They emphasised that there is no safe way to kill people or to help them to their own suicide.
If we analyse, assisting a person to commit suicide is not a one man’s decision. It is a matter of concern for humanity as it involves the consent and help of another person to murder the other. It could be either a friend, relatives, medical staff or society who in this whole process of giving his/her consent also kills his own morality thereby disrespecting the true value of life.
Euthanasia is a grave violation of the law of God, since it is totally against the unchanging value of the commandment “You shall not kill”
On a concluding note, Genesis 9:6 quotes, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in His own image and likeness”.
