The body of the Indian priest Fr. Martin Xavier, who was found dead on a beach in Scotland, two days after he was reported, missing, has not been brought to India yet. The Indian government has urged the government of Scotland to finish the formalities as early as possible and bring the priest’s body to his native, Kerala. Oommen Chandy, former chief minister of Kerala had sent a letter to the External Affairs Minister, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj asking her to intervene to bring the body of Fr. Martin Xavier to India.
As reported by Matters India, Oommen Chandy stressed in his letter that, “Post-mortem and other formalities had been completed a week ago and the reason for not releasing the mortal remains was not clear.” Further, he added, “Despite having 23 days, the reason for not completing the examination of the body was unclear.”
Fr. Martin Xavier of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) belongs to Pulinkunnu in Alappuzha. His family and Carmelite members are expecting his body since July first week.
