Kibeho: The construction of the largest basilica in the world will soon begin in Kibaho, the southern province of the African country of Rwanda. The church leadership and the state jointly reached a final decision in this regard. When completed, the Basilica of Rwanda will surpass the St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican in terms of size. The Basilica is expected to open to believers in November 2021. The Rwandan media reports that the Basilica and surrounding area accommodate about 100,000 people.

In 1980, the church was built on the spot where it is believed that the Holy Virgin Mary appeared to three school girls. The Virgin Mary has warned of a massacre in Rwanda. In 2001, the local bishop of the area announced that the Virgin Mary had appeared and was credible. Since then, tens of thousands of people arrive here. Imakuli Iribagisa, a Rwandan-born young woman living in the US, finances the basilica.
